grateful
This word… grateful… has been on my mind lately.
Through the last 4-ish months, we have watched this pandemic continue to unfold, experienced racial and political tensions, and instead of being able to be together to support one another, we need to be cautious and keep our distance from those we love. And as we inch closer to fall, our schools (like other organizations/businesses) are forced to create new policies and procedures in attempt to get our children back in school. At this time in history, nothing seems normal.
And I would like to say that during these challenging times, I have been grateful, seeing all the beautiful blessings in my life. But the truth is, I have often spent my time thinking about all I am missing. Missing family and friends… missing our church community and worshipping in person together… missing the ability to walk into a store without a mask - my list could go on and on. And not only have I missed people and things, I have been a bit… well, crabby and negative.
Then in a recent conversation, our dear Luel, Journey’s Ethiopian representative, said this, “If we are not grateful... the devil will show us what we don't have. We have to choose gratitude and be grateful God is with us; He is holding our hand and giving us that we need.”
I was so blessed by these words especially with my “glass half empty mentality.” These words hold me accountable and remind me not to give the devil a foothold in my life. And when I really stop to think about it, I have so many things to be thankful for.
I would encourage each of us to pay attention to what we are grateful each and every day. When we pause and reflect, our perspective changes. And I don’t know about you, but I need to reflect each and every day!
So, let’s start. What are you grateful for today?
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances;
for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
